Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you got started in the apparel industry?

Hi! My name is Hira. I grew up in Raleigh, NC, and attended NC State University for both undergrad and grad school. I majored in Textile Design with a Technical Textile minor and later earned a Master of Science in Textiles. During my time at the Wilson College of Textiles, I learned a lot about how fabrics are made, specifically through weaving, knitting, and nonwovens. I explored various textile processes and enjoyed them so much that I decided to build a career in this field! As a graduate student, I assisted fellow students with the embroidery machine, which gave me my first in-depth experience with machine embroidery.

What inspired you to start Currently Apparel?

I started Currently Apparel with my friend and college classmate, Vanessa Daniels. We wanted to create a business that incorporated what we learned with our textile degrees but made it relatable to many. After graduation, facing uncertainty, we created "Currently Apparel" to celebrate and appreciate the present moment, regardless of where life might lead. We began with the Cities Collection, starting with "Currently, Raleigh NC," and it has since expanded. What's exciting is that it's customizable, allowing you to make it as playful or serious as you like!

What makes Currently Apparel different from other brands?

Currently Apparel specializes in crafting intricately embroidered clothing that reflects the unique chapters of your life's story. The brand offers customizable sweatshirts, t-shirts, and tote bags with sayings ranging from "Currently, Out of Office" to "Currently, Trying My Best." The ease of customizing clothing through embroidery sets Currently Apparel apart from others!

Where are you from, and how has your background influenced your approach to fashion?

My parents are originally from Pakistan, although I was born and grew up here in the US. Growing up with Pakistani heritage, I've been exposed to rich, vibrant textiles and intricate designs, which has shaped my appreciation for detail and color. This cultural influence inspires me to blend traditional elements with modern styles, especially in my daily lifestyle.

Who are some notable people or brands you’ve worked with in the past?

Through Currently Apparel, we’re excited to make our mark on the local shopping scene. We’ve collaborated on some fun customized projects with N.C. State Vet School and Videri Chocolate Factory. You can also find our shirts at Curate in Crabtree Valley Mall or in Downtown Raleigh!

What’s your favorite piece from the Currently Apparel collection and why?

My favorite sweatshirt has to be the "Currently, Trying My Best" design. It's something that everyone finds both funny and relatable, as it reflects the universal truth that all we can really do is put our best effort into everything. My second favorite would be the "Currently, Optimistic" design! I like to stay optimistic, and I love having a shirt that serves as a reminder of that.

Can you share a fun fact about yourself that most people don’t know?

I've been to 12 different countries, and I studied abroad in Italy for a semester. I love prioritizing travel to explore and experience different parts of the world. As a designer, encountering diverse cultures provides endless inspiration for my work.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time when you’re not working on Currently Apparel?

In my free time, I enjoy going on walks with friends, baking, biking around Raleigh (with The Bike Library!), and exploring different coffee shops. I also like to read and work on my freelance design work.

If you could describe Currently Apparel in three words, what would they be?

Relatable, Distinctive, Uplifting

Where can people find and buy Currently Apparel products?

You can find a selection of our products in a store called Curate, located either at Crabtree Valley Mall or in Downtown Raleigh. We also sell chocolate-themed shirts at Videri Chocolate Factory. Otherwise, we often sell at markets in the local area, which is a great way to see our products in person and make a purchase. You can follow us on Instagram to check out where we will be next! We also ship nationally for anyone who shops on our online website at www.currentlyapparel.com.

Cameron likes bikes and coffee. Find him at a coffee shop around town and he will probably smile, wave, and say hi. Unless he's deep in The Thought Cavern. In that case, your mileage may vary.
